Instructions: You will need to watch the 2006 film El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) and answer the
following questions based on what you learn through the film and your own research about the Spanish Civil
War (1936-1939). Unfortunately, the movie used to be available on Netflix streaming, but it was removed
recently, so you’ll need to try Amazon for a copy of the film.
Questions to answer
Question I: Who were the two parties that fought against one another in the Civil War? Name one important
leader from each side.
Question II: From the movie, describe the character Ofelia and her mother. How would you describe their
relationship? How does that relationship change once Ofelia meets the Captain?
Question III: Who is Mercedes and what secret is she keeping while working for the Captain at the estate?
Question IV: Name one task that Ofelia is asked to perform and describe how she accomplishes it.
Question V: What is Ofelia’s fate at the end of the movie? Because some people can see this last scene as a subjective
experience for the viewer, what is your interpretation of the ending?
