Write a short review on an academic journal (you can use footnotes in the review). You
can search for the Journal articles in Communication and Mass Media Complete
database accessible from the Ottenheimer library’s website under “Articles and
Databases.”
Pick journals (with full-text accessibility) that seem to mirror your potential research
interests. You must choose academic journals (hint: you will have to do proper citation,
or you will lose points).
Please stick with journalism and mass media related journals and articles. Give specific
examples when appropriate to illustrate your understanding. Do not excessively quote
from the journal—write this in your own words as evidence of your understanding of the
articles and the journals.
1. Name the journal you looked at and the specific dates/issues of that one journal
that you examined.
2. Look at 4 to 6 issues of the journal from the past three years. I recommend doing
consecutive issues; this will give you a good sense of how it appears over the
course of a year. How would you describe the scope and type of research (topics,
theories, and methodology published in this journal? Is there a focus on U.S. or
non-U.S. topics? How would you describe the reading/knowledge level needed
for someone to understand the article?
3. Find two (2) articles from the issues that interest you and are all related and can
form the basis for your research proposal. Summarize the two articles in about
300 words or less. For that, state, 1) overall topic, 2) what was examined in the
research article, and 3) a basic description of the type of methodology and
theories used. Please submit the articles together with your review.
4. How could you use the research in the articles analyzed to inspire your own
research agenda? In other words, how are these articles useful to you as a
researcher in terms of research methods and theory? Give at least one example for
each article and be specific. Please focus on how the article was written, or how
the research was done. Avoid stating how you felt about the topic or its findings.
5. Submit your paper as a MS Word Document. Write a minimum of 1.5 double
space pages.
Note: All references must be well cited using a consistent citation style. There are
citation styles documents available under the Resources link in the course shell on
Blackboard. Please choose a style and use it consistently
