Introduction: Communication is essential in professional life and can facilitate or hinder the quality and safety of patient centered care. Communication is linked implicitly or explicitly to the 15 Standards outlined in the American Nurses Association (ANA). (2015). Scope and Standards of Practice (3rd ed.) with attention to the Standards for Professional Performance such as: Communication (9), Collaboration (10), and Leadership (11). Mentoring is a tool that can assist nurses to develop the needed competencies for interprofessional communication, collaboration with the health care team, and leadership as well as enhancement in one’s professional practice.

Objective: Students will demonstrate achievement of selected course student learning outcomes such as applying theories and models, integrating culturally competent communication skills with leadership to promote quality and safety, demonstrate competency in communication for collaborative practice, and discuss strategies for ongoing professional development.

Assignment: After reading the Vance (2011) book and considering class content and activities, students will write maximum of 6 pages, paper about communication and mentoring. The paper will focus on a short scenario created by students about the use of mentoring and professional communication in their nursing experiences. The scenario may take the form of an actual experience the student had related to mentoring, interprofessional communication and collaboration, leadership, or professional development through mentoring. It may also be a scenario created from the original ideas of the student or from a YouTube video, poem, story, or article. Students need to identify the cultural implications related to the scenario they selected, or related to the interdisciplinary team. The paper will be expected to include background and literature from nursing professional journals, the competencies outlined by the ANA (2015) professional performance competencies such as communication, collaboration, and leadership to enhance safe, quality, culturally competent nursing care. In the theoretical perspective section, students will apply the theories of communication, models such as the mentoring model described by Vance (2011), and the ANA (2015) standards. Students will discuss how it applies to collaborative health care. Students will use research and other evidence to support the key points. Students will identify one implication for nursing practice and at least two recommendations for nursing practice, education, nursing research, or administration. The paper will include the following sections:

Introduction – includes an introduction of the paper, and describes why they selected the scenario and the source of the scenario (experience, original ideas, other sources such as YouTube video, poem, etc.)

Scenario – may take the form of an actual experience the student had related to mentoring, interprofessional communication and collaboration, leadership, or professional development through mentoring. It may also be a scenario created from the original ideas of the student or from a YouTube video, poem, story, or article.

Background/Literature Review – includes support for the main ideas/points in the paper through a variety of evidence linking the key points to communication, collaboration, and leadership to enhance safe, quality, cultural competent nursing care. A minimum of 4 articles from nursing professional journals (not course required readings) are expected.

Theoretic Perspective – apply the theories of communication, models such as the mentoring model described by Vance (2011), and the ANA (2015) standards. Discuss the theoretical perspective in relation to the background and literature and scenario.

Reflection – reflect upon how you will cultivate your mentoring potential, communication skills, and talents for success in the areas of communication, collaboration, and leadership.

Implications and Recommendations – discuss one implication for nursing practice connected to what you have learned by completing this paper (specifically from the key ideas, background, and/or theoretical perspectives) Make at least two recommendations related to nursing practice, education, research, or administration.

Closing – provide a summary and make closing statements
