Management Team Simulation Paper, Leadership and Team Simulation Analysis Report

Leadership and Team Simulation Analysis

In the workplace, working in teams is almost inevitable.  Sometimes it is a small team working on a departmental project and sometimes it is a large cross-functional team working on a major organizational initiative.  Whatever the situation, team members must learn to find a balance among each other’s objectives and those of the project and organization.  As such, you are to complete a leadership and team simulation and report your results and findings.

You and your team members will come together and assign each other into one of 5 roles.  These include: Leader, Physician, Photographer, Marathoner, and Environmentalist.

You will find a time to come together online (either in person or virtual) and complete the simulation from start to finish.  There is a chat feature for you all to correspond in real time.  That is what you should use to communicate, as a record will be kept for me to review.  You should allow yourselves 2-3 hours to review all materials and complete the simulation.

Assignment – Leadership and Team Simulation Analysis Report

You are to submit a report of the results of your performance on the Leadership and Team Simulation.  This report will include the following information / analyses:

PART 1a – TEAM RESULTS – The team leader will write this portion of the report.  Detail an analysis of your team’s results.  Focus on the following information:

  • Were team goals achieved?
  • Who made it to the summit? Who needed rescue and why?

PART 1b – TEAM PROCESS – The team will collaborate on this portion of the report.  Detail for me your team’s strategic plan and processes for making key decisions. Consider the following:

  • How much time did you take to strategize before implementing?

  • Did you use the course resources in your strategic plan? If so, how?  If not, why not?

  • What about your strategy worked best? What did not work out the way you thought it would?  Why do you think that was the case?

  • What were strengths & weaknesses of your team’s process for making key decisions?

  • What did you do when people disagreed?

PART 2 – INDIVIDUAL PERSPECTIVES – Each student on the team will write their own ‘reflection analysis’ for this portion of the report.  It is meant to be an honest, single individual perspective of their experience participating in the simulation.  While the leader or another individual (perhaps the observer) may edit an individual’s submission for grammar, spelling, organization or professionalism in presentation, the individual providing their own section of the report must have the final say over the content and message being communicated to me.  Please write in the first person.  This section will include the following information:

  • Student name and role

  • What were your personal goals? Were they achieved?  Why or why not?  What were your main challenges to you achieving your personal goal?

  • How well did you balance trying to achieve your personal goal with working toward the team achieving its goal?

  • Was there anything you could have done better or differently to produce a better outcome for you and the team?

  • How well did your leader help or hinder both your and the team’s ability to achieve their goals?

PART 3 – LESSONS LEARNED – The team will collaborate on this portion of the report.  Start by listing 3 distinct lessons learned regarding leadership and team process from completing the simulation.  For each, detail what it means to learn these lessons and how you will take what you learned from completing the simulation toward making your next team situation more successful.

As you detail each of your team’s 3 lessons, consider the following questions as references:

  • Did your team share information effectively to make decisions?

  • If team goals were not achieved, what could the team have done or what could certain individuals have done differently to achieve a better outcome?

  • If team goals were achieved, what changes might have been made to achieve a better outcome?

  • Might you have better used the course resources to evoke a better overall outcome? If so, how?

  • What information might have been of great use to you in realizing a better outcome?

  • When faced with a team leadership situation, how will you (collective) now better handle it as a result of these lessons learned? Be detailed.

NOTES

  • Your report is to be submitted to the Canvas course site assignment by class time on the date according to the class schedule.

  • You are expected to use only course material (and your own experiences) as a resource for this assignment. I do NOT want you scouring the Internet for hints and tools.

  • You may consider course resources from other week’s topics or chapters in your analysis.

  • It is recommended by Harvard Publishing that you use Firefox or Google Chrome as your browser.

  • It is recommended by SJU that you use a PC and not a Mac

  • While you may work together virtually, you must do so synchronously and without stopping from start to finish.

  • Make sure to separate each section out and answer each question and sub-question directly so I know that you have considered it in depth. Make sure to highlight course resources (articles / TED Talks / assessments / other) used throughout your paper explicitly so I can identify their value and use to you in your action plan.

  • Your results on the simulation have no effect on your grade.

  • Be sure to review the document Writing Business Papers that I provided for you on Canvas.

  • Remember to review the assignment rubric on Canvas!
