Please read ”Women’s Diaries of the Westward Journey” by Lillian Schlissel. And then write a four pages
journal on it. Basically just write some of your thoughts of the book. Here is some topics you may write about in
the journal. Below are the requirements that you need to write in the journal.
1. What question[s] did Schlissel ask herself that led to her researching and writing this book What types of
primary sources did she use as her evidence What conclusions did she arrive at after examining that evidence
Where did she find her evidence Was there sufficient evidence available to warrant her conclusions
2. Schlissel devotes the second half of her book to the diary entries of four different women: Catherine Haun,
Lydia Allen Rudd, Amelia Stewart Knight, Jane Gould Tourtillott. Pick one of these four diaries, read through it,
write about it in your journal, and be prepared to discuss it in class. How does this particular woman s
experience compare to the generalizations and conclusions that Schlissel makes in her main text Why did this
woman write her diary Why might Schlissel have chosen to include this particular diary out of the over one
hundred she read for her book Does any character trait or experience set this diarist apart from other women on
the trail Note that for purposes of this exercise, you may not use the handwritten sheets of Barsina Rogers
French.
