Assignment Background:
Oftentimes, I find when working with students, that general knowledge of potential jobs, positions, careers and the detail of those potential opportunities is a great unknown. Over the years, as I have worked with and taught students how to find information about ‘jobs,’ students seem to be most excited when I show them the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook, a major source of job data in the United States. There are other jobs data sites, and your own WTAMU Career Services office on campus is an EXCELLENT source for helping you complete the ‘functional’ mechanics of landing a job–if you haven’t reached out to them and you are hesitating thinking you will find ‘that job’ after you graduate, my guess is that might be true, but, you will find that job quicker and more efficiently IF you are working in conjunction with career services sooner than later.
Beyond the scope of a job ‘title,’ people generally do not understand or know what all is entailed with that job…what’s it going to be like, what does it pay, what are the requirements, how do I get it, etc. Further, when examining jobs within the financial services arena, what codes of ethics is one bound and how do those impact the positions from a day to day perspective. Additionally, if one can learn of what journals, professional and or trade magazines (I am not talking the Wall Street Journal here) accompany certain careers, one can enhance knowledge and even potentially benchmark best practices. This assignment serves to synthesize the information from the first three chapters in a way that is appropriate to the scope of financial services.
Instructions:
This assignment builds on the foundational activities given throughout the chapters, if you have not completed the activities listed for each chapter, you may find this assignment much easier to understand and complete by doing so first. Your work should be typed in MS Word and submitted to the appropriate drop box (link above), it is perfectly fine to submit work early, as the drop box is open until closing date. Clearly break your work into sections for assessment purposes–the more clearly you show your work, the more clearly I can provide scoring feedback. No late submissions will be accepted, and submissions are to only be submitted via appropriate dropbox. Please be thorough and complete in your responses, and make absolutely sure you put all writing ‘in your own words’ as your score will reflect the depth, level, and detail provided. Writing guidelines: Minimum 500 words, double spaced 12 point font (2-3 pages double spaced, 12 point font). Include a title page with your complete name and WTAMU ID number. This work will be scored in conjunction with the WTAMU COB BBA scoring rubric for Objective 1.1 Written Communication: Demonstrate Effective Writing for Business.
Section 1:
1.) After exploring the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook (Ch. 1 Activity 2), examine 10 financial services jobs that look appealing. 1A.) List these 10 potential jobs, briefly discussing the following: position summary information (e.g., pay, education, work experience, on the job training, number of jobs, job outlook, employment change), what the position does, the work environment, how to become one, and similar occupations. 1B.) Narrow this list to your TOP 3…briefly discuss why you chose the 3 that you did. (You see what you did there….hence the name BIG10:3…creative, I know, right?).
Section 2 (as if it couldn’t get ANY better…):
2.) How does consultative selling (Ch. 2 Activity 2–see where I am going with this?) potentially impact the 3 financial services jobs you chose? Discuss. 2A.) If your financial services position does not ‘seem’ to be impacted by consultative selling, be creative and propose ways based on your knowledge gained in 1A above of how YOU would possibly change that? Is there a benefit to this change? Discuss.
Section 3 (I hope you are having as much fun with this as I am….):
3.) What ethical codes / Codes of Ethics bind these careers of positions in your top 3 (Ch. 3 Activity 2)? List them. 3A.) What journals or professional / trade magazines accompany these careers (Ch. 3 Activity 2)? List them. If you can not find a potential journal and or professional / trade magazine, you have NOT looked hard enough…broaden your search and utilize the WTAMU Library Resources! ; – )
Section 4 (Let’s look at an article…still having fun?):
4.) Using the WTAMU Library Online, find one article from the journal/magazine/trade publication you listed above relating to 1 of your top 3 chosen financial services position. 4A.) Properly CITE the article (more information on APA citations are also given on the WTAMU Library Website…look it up if you are not familiar with ‘how’ to source via APA style–it’s pretty easy). 4B.) Provide a written summary of the article–do not copy and paste an abstract…put this in your own words.
Section 5 (Summary):
5.) Write a conclusion summarizing what you have done in this assignment–be thorough and detailed…what were the major ‘take-aways,’ and or ‘a-ha’ moments you experienced during this explorative assignment.
