The Assignment:

1. Utilizing the materials available to you on-line, YOU WILL research the current state of youth club basketball in the United States. This should include:
   • The article posted on the recent changes made by the NCAA, the NBA, the NBA Players Association, and USA Basketball
     • The article posted that includes the opinions of various NBA players on the state of AAU basketball and what it is doing to the game of basketball
     • No less than 3 other articles available to you online that you will be required to site as sources

 

2. You will then utilize the information to prepare a minimum 2-page written analysis and discussion of the value and impact of club youth basketball in the United States.

 

3. Utilizing your knowledge of the­­ situation, and facts and logical conclusions drawn from your research, you will answer the following questions:
   • Do you believe that the current structure of elite youth basketball in the United States provides the best possible opportunity for athletes to gain exposure to NCAA coaches? Please explain your rationale.
   • There is a growing disagreement on the current day value that AAU specifically provides the sport of basketball. Many people, including current NBA players, believe that AAU Basketball is bad for the sport, while others strongly disagree.  What do you believe, and why?  What about the other elite youth basketball programs (Nike EYBL, Under Armor, Adidas)?  Are they providing value to the sport?  Why/why not?
   • Do you believe the new rules put in place by the NCAA will help or hinder young athlete’s ability to gain exposure? Why/why not? Please explain.
   • Besides the student athletes, the other stakeholders in this debate are the colleges and universities. How will the new rules impact their ability to recruit the best talent?  Do you believe it will help or hinder them?  Please explain.

 

4. In conclusion, you will then give your opinion on the following:
   • How do you believe elite youth basketball in the United States should be structured moving forward?

 

5. It is possible that you will all leverage different information to come to your conclusions. That is fine.  There is not one right answer.  However, your answers should be well thought out and supported by facts and information from your research.

 

Specific Guidelines for your submissions

 

Case Study #2 is due via Canvas submission by the end of the on Monday, October 1^st and must be submitted according these specifications:

 

1. Typed, 1.5-line-spaced on standard-sized paper with 1” margins on all sides,
2. Use a clear font around 11-12 point
3. Name and student ID on the top of each page
4. The body (ie, text) of your response should be a minimum of 2 pages with a maximum of 4 pages
5. Number each page
6. Provide numbered/footnoted sources and references at the end of the doc
7. Document must be submitted in MS Word format via Canvas in response to the assignment.
