A general theory of perception based on the resolution of stimulus
ambiguity by natural and contrived references is proposed. The
argument begins with an assumption and an observation. The
assumption is that perception has evolved in the interest of accurately
representing external states of affairs to the mobile observer. The
observation is that due to movement and postural changes the pattern
of stimulation at the receptors – the proximal stimulus – is equally
representative of two or more states of affairs. The central thesis is
that natural perceptual references are involved in resolving ambiguous
stimulus patterns to a close representation of the actual state of affairs.
Natural references are present in the environment and in the signalled
motion and posture of the observer. T
