Based on pp. 1 236 in The Turbulent World of Middle East Soccer by James M. Dorsey, is the sport of soccer
emblematic of politics in the Middle East Why or why not What can the various soccer clubs, their fans,
competitions/matches and the arenas tell us about politics in the region Please address the following three
themes/issues in your argument: 1) the relationship between the state and society; 2) national identity; and 3) the
religious/secular dichotomy. Please reference examples from at least 3 different middle Eastern countries and/or
communities (e.g. Palestinians and the Kurds).
