Unit Two Benchmarking and Best Practices

Unit Two

Benchmarking and Best Practices

Many hospitals today are part of a health care system and in order for the corporate staff to keep track of how the hospitals are performing, establishing key indicators which give the hospital directors a guideline to implement in their department.  This correlates to reimbursement, as if the processes in HIM are not current, it could affect the coding area.   As a new HIM Director you may wonder how staff productivity is by benchmarking against other hospitals.  All of this data is important to know and understand as it is considered “best practices.”  Information can be found on the Internet, and through the AHIMA website that addresses benchmarking and best practices for the HIM department.

340 -500 images per hour worked

10 x 225 = 2,250

500 x 8 hours = 4,000

2250 / 4000 = .56

Research articles through the Internet and summarize how measuring productivity standards will change or have changed with automated coding and EHR’s.  The paper should be 1-2 pages in length.

3)

You recognized a potential problem in your department.  Many of the employees come to work in the morning and within the first hour of work, take a break so they can go the hospital cafeteria for breakfast.  They often will take another break later in the morning to go for a cup of coffee. The productivity standards that you established are not being met and you are worried that it is because of these two breaks that the staff are taking each day.  How would you determine if this is the problem or if it does not affect the productivity of the staff?  And if it is affecting the standards, how will you resolve it?

A number of students have had issues with this assignment, so I am giving you the answers for the transcription area, since that seems to be the most difficult.

Beginner

(Measurement based on 65 character line)

3,300 characters

50.8 lines per report

900 lines per 8 hour day

How many FTEs do you need?

50.8 x 225 = 11430 lines per report

900 x 5 = 4500 hours

11430/4500 = 2.54

2.54 FTEs

225×50.8=11,430

11430/900 (lines per 8 hour day)=12.7

13 FTE’s

Intermediate

(Measurement based on          65 character line)

3,300 characters

50.8 lines per report

1100 lines per 8 hour day

How many FTEs do you     need?

50.08 x 225 = 11430

1100 x 5 = 5500

11430/5500 = 2.08

2.08 FTEs

225×50.8=11430

11430/1100=10.4

So, either 10 or 10.5 FTE’s

Experienced

(Measurement based on 65 character line)

3,300 characters

50.8 lines per report

1300 lines per 8 hour day

How many FTEs do you need?

50.8 x 225 = 11430

1300 x 5 = 6500

11430/6500 = 1.76

1.76 FTEs

225×50.8=11430

11430/1300=8.8, so it would be 9 FTE’s
