This is an exercise in “reading rhetorically”.
Read 30 Little Turtles by Thomas L. Friedman (A&B Textbook, pages 106-107) carefully. Your task is to apply the strategies that we have covered in this session to this text. In other words, we want to read Mr. Friedman’s article rhetorically. I suggest you take steps that I have provided for you in “Strategies for Reading Rhetorically Preview the document” document. In order to help you with this process, I have provided the following questions for you. Try to answer these questions while reading 30 Little Turtles: (Read with pencil/highlighter/piece of paper and record your thought processes while you are reading the article):
What person and/or organization is behind this essay (you might need a little Google search if you need to!)? What are their credentials (why should a reader listen to them)? What audience are they targeting? What is their purpose for writing this paper? What is the specific genre they are working with (i.e. is it an email, a blog, a newspaper article etc.)? What are the specific requirements of this particular genre (i.e. what is and is not allowed)? What are main ideas of the article (remember main ideas!)? How is the article structured (what are the main parts? how are the main ideas combined and introduced in the article)?
