- This assignment is labelled “Professional Assignment” to differentiate it from other assignments such as “exercises”, “problems” etc. While the cases may appear similar to those familiar with the text book “exercises” or “problems”, you should approach this component differently so that you can maximise your marks. Some general hints are given below and more detailed instructions are specifically given separately in in due course. These latter instructions should be read together with the General Conditions stipulated here. Where there is appearance of conflict between the specific and general conditions, you should choose the conditions that provide the most professional results in your submission and, where necessary, the appropriate justifications for your choice. That is, you should treat this Assignment as you would treat a submission to a paying client and not merely as a classroom academic exercise.
- Where questions are asked in your assigned Cases, they are asked for good reasons; normally, they are to provide you with the necessary prompts, hints, clues, guidance, directions and indications as to what the Case author regards as important issues of that particular case. With the prime objective of a PROFESSIONAL presentation of your report in mind, at the minimum, address all the questions that need to be addressed, to indicate that you are at least technically competent and understand the gist of the particular case. How you present your answers to the questions depends on your understanding and interpretation of how an accounting report should be professionally presented to an important client. You are to provide all answers in your own words and provide the report using a proper style (such as APA, or based on any appropriate official financial reporting format that you may see in actual corporate reporting ) and add any references where necessary. In addition to addressing each of the questions at a technical level, you should provide appropriate Executive Summaries to provide context to each section of your answers to the case. Ideally, where possible, you should attempt to interpret and synthesize all the relevant technical answers/findings into an integrated Conclusion for the whole report.
- Your job as a professional accountant is to, mainly, provide to your client, a system to acquire, store and present financial and related information. You will most probably be responsible for the maintenance of such a system and its update and upkeep. Increasingly, the mere provision of rote financial data, in standard format, is being usurped by artificial machine intelligence along with your potential to advance your career. You need to treat your potential audience as discerning and paying clients who deserve your best effort to service and to understand them – this sometimes include the relevant subjective issues apart from and in addition to those that are rote and necessary.
- Your presentation of numbers in charts and tables are expected to at least be in accordance to a conventionally acceptable accounting report format. At the minimum, these illustrations are to be informative and appropriately labelled and within context. Ideally, your responses, aided by numerical evidence should be communicated to a reader in a coherent way and where possible, the issues interpreted in a way that reflects your expertise and understanding of the issues you have identified in the case.
