Low-Wage Workers in Toronto

Low-Wage Workers in Toronto

The assignment requires comparative analysis of focus group interviews conducted with precariously employed, racialized workers who live in a working class, immigrant neighbourhood in the City of Toronto. One focus group was with Canadian Born people of colour, the majority of whom self-identified as Black. A second interview was with South Asian immigrants, most recently arrived professionals, who spoke Hindi or Urdu. The transcript data is messy and that is part of the challenge.

Use Newman’s techniques of summarizing data and providing the occasional quotes to answer the following questions. Each claim you make must be substantiated by the data. As you answer these questions, try to compare and contrast across the two focus groups.

The questions that your paper should address are:

  • What strategies do workers use to find work and/or to find better work? These might be long or short-term strategies or planning.
  • How do workers interpret their labour market experiences? In other words, how do they account for their inability to find good jobs?
  • What meaning does work, and different types of work (formal, informal, temping, illegal, etc.) have for focus group participants?

Assignment Requirements:

  • Structure of paper
    • Introduction
    • Analysis of evidence with three subsection headings, one per question above
    • Conclusion
  • double space, 12 pt font.
  • Late penalty: 5 points for first missed deadline and 1 additional point for each additional day late
