Debate Thought Paper(10 points)
Due: Thursday, June 22nd
Each student will work to research a controversial question within personality psychology. Based on your research, you will be asked to prepare a set of arguments for both sides of the debate.
You may choose any ONE of the following debates to consider:
- Cognition v. Emotion
- Person v. Situation
- Personality Testing: Good or Bad?
The first step is to choose a debate. Please inform me of your chosen topic no later than Saturday, June 3rd.
After you have selected a debate to research, the next step is to familiarize yourself with the empirical, peer-reviewed evidence within personality psychology that has investigated your assigned question. You may begin exploring your assigned question by conducting a simple Google search. Once you are ready to begin the research process in earnest, please follow the steps I have outlined in the instructions on using the electronic databases, posted within the Course Materials. Be sure to identify at least two pieces of peer-reviewed evidence for each side of the debate.
Grading:
- Includes at least 4 sources for each side of the debate, for a total of at least 8 sources. At least four of these sources shall be appropriate, peer-reviewed reference articles.
- Includes at least one logical argument for each side of the debate, for a total of at least two logical arguments.
- Argument(s) is/are persuasive.
- Includes at least one challenge question for each side of the debate, for a total of at least two challenge questions.
- Challenge questions are relevant and sufficiently challenging in that they comment on significant flaws in an argument or focus on strengths of a competing argument.
- Includes thoughtful responses to each of the challenge questions raised. Your responses should fully answer each question and should use empirical evidence (not personal opinion) for support.
