Project is directed at the security issues in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) where the control and<\/p>\n
data \u201cplanes\u201d are separated. If I have understood the proposal correctly SDN offers network<\/p>\n
administration advantages; however, by separating control and data, the control layer becomes<\/p>\n
vulnerable to security attacks, particularly Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks (not sure why<\/p>\n
this should be the case, but OK).<\/p>\n
The proposed PhD programme of work seeks to address this issue.<\/p>\n
The research question is:<\/p>\n
What is the role of SDN in the defence against DDoS attacks.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t think this is expressed correctly, I don\u2019t think SDN has a \u201crole\u201d in the defence against DDoS<\/p>\n
attacks. I think the research question is something like \u201cHow can DDoS attacks be best mitigated against<\/p>\n
in the context of SDN\u201d.<\/p>\n
A number of issues are identified associated with the resolution of the research question; OK, but no<\/p>\n
hints are given as to how they might be addressed.<\/p>\n
Although elements of the proposal are unclear I believe there is sufficient research content and<\/p>\n
\u201capplication novelty\u201d for a PhD. However, I was unclear as to the \u201ctechnical novelty\u201d of any proposed<\/p>\n
solution. Indeed, looking at the programme of work, there does not seem to be anything new that is<\/p>\n
being proposed (but see comments on research plan below).<\/p>\n
The research plan includes deliverable s of various kinds, but I would have liked to have seen some<\/p>\n
planned academic papers.<\/p>\n
Feedback on the timescales and planning, including any constructive comments on how it could<\/p>\n
be modified.<\/p>\n
The PhD programme plan seems feasible, although I have some concerns, which might have arisen out of the way<\/p>\n
the research plan is presented.<\/p>\n
My main concern is that there are a lot of Work Packages (WPs) directed at reviewing existing work. In fact<\/p>\n
Phases 1 to 5, November 2015 to February 2018 (more two years of the available time), are directed at reviews of<\/p>\n
various sorts. When does the original\/novel work happen?<\/p>\n
Phase 6, \u201cDoing experimental work\u201d (Think we need more academic\/scientific title) is directed at evaluating<\/p>\n
previous work. Again, where is the new work undertaken?<\/p>\n
Almost three years into the research, in WP 6.3<\/a>, the student intends to prepare and send questionnaires to<\/p>\n organisations, this seems very late. Also I doubt many organisation would be prepared to divulge the security<\/p>\n challenges they face as they would not like their customers to think the have any security challenges.<\/p>\n The project plan dose not include a thesis writing WP, when is this going to happen?<\/p>\n Any other issues?<\/p>\n The use of English in the proposal is very poor, which is a cause for concern. The student should take<\/p>\n every opportunity to practice writing technical reports to support the research work<\/p>\n The student should decide how to write SDN, in the proposal it is written in three different ways!:<\/p>\n 1) Software define networking<\/p>\n 2) Software defined networking<\/p>\n 3) Software-defined networking<\/p>\n The document uses the phrase (para 3) \u201cThe above research\u201d but no research is presented \u201cabove\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Project is directed at the security issues in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) where the control and data \u201cplanes\u201d are separated.
