\u00b7 Individual presentations of final papers will take place April 21-28<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Time limit: Ten minutes long including Q&A<\/p>\n
\u00b7 This is worth 10%; no need to send me your slides or presentation notes<\/p>\n
\u00b7 You will receive a presentation grade from me with my notes via email<\/p>\n
Assignment Objectives<\/b><\/p>\n
\u00b7 Enhance self-confidence speaking to an audience <\/p>\n
\u00b7 Improve communications skills<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Demonstrate depth, mastery and understanding of your topic <\/p>\n
\u00b7 Transfer and apply your written argument into an oral one (through structure and delivery)<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Convince or move people to thoughtfully consider your position\/topic; call to action<\/p>\n
Helpful Tips<\/b><\/p>\n
\u00b7 Use pathos, logos, ethos where it makes sense in your presentation <\/p>\n
\u00b7 Utilize verbal signals and cues throughout your presentation <\/p>\n
o \u201cMy first point…\u201d<\/p>\n
o \u201cAnother example…\u201d<\/p>\n
o \u201cFinally, to summarize\/or conclude\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Simplify your language \u2013 save the flowery stuff for the paper. <\/p>\n
\u00b7 Be strategically repetitive<\/p>\n
o \u201cThis is what I\u2019m going to tell you…now here\u2019s me telling you, and, finally, this is what I\u2019ve just told you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00b7 You must include your opposing argument<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Make a judgment call on how much your readers may generally know about the topic (GMOs vs. drinking age) and make sure your presentation addresses that<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Practice. For delivery, flow and making sure you\u2019re staying within the allotted time. (Note cards are okay to use during your presentation)<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Finish strong \u2013 include a succinct wrap up, pose one thoughtful question at the end and then ask for any general questions <\/p>\n
Use of Visuals <\/b><\/p>\n
Visuals shouldn\u2019t be your entire presentation; they should augment it.<\/p>\n
o PowerPoint, Prezi, Word Cloud, photographs, etc.<\/p>\n
o Slides \u2013 quick bullets, no long paragraphs, don\u2019t write me a novel<\/p>\n
o Include your visual if your essay option includes one<\/p>\n
o If you\u2019re not using a visual, consider finding one that captures your topic<\/p>\n
RUBRIC<\/b><\/p>\n
In a nutshell: <\/p>\n
Hook. Inform. Persuade\/Engage\/Inspire. Acknowledge. Conclude. <\/p>\n
What I\u2019ll be looking for:<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Hook (reel me in) – Consider highlighting a fact that is staggering, surprising or sobering or kick off with a video\/audio clip or image<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Clear presentation of thesis that is well-crafted and hammered home<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Main points well organized and put together<\/p>\n
o Your paper and presentation do not have to be necessarily identical. They will be graded independently of each other. So if there is some information that you came across that translates well for a presentation, you don\u2019t have to include it in your final paper (and vice versa). <\/p>\n
\u00b7 Use of supporting evidence and examples<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Smart use of time\/within time limit<\/p>\n
o At 10 minutes long for a 6 page paper, this should be an abbreviated and refined version of your written paper. Be discerning and pick and choose what to include for what could be rhetorically effective from a visual\/oral perspective, but also make sure you\u2019re still presenting a complete, cohesive argument.<\/p>\n
