Evidence of copying (from students or other sources) will lead to a 0 on the assignment and an Academic Dishonesty report will be filed with the college. PLEASE ATTACH THE RUBRIC AS A COVERPAGE TO YOUR 1-2 PAGE WRITE-UP.
Observation/Phenomenon:
? Describe the observation or phenomenon that you are curious about.
? It can be a simple observation like, ?Sour cream is very thick.?
? Or it can be a phenomenon that you have seen, heard about, or just made through exploration.
o Chicken bones get rubbery when left in Coke for a few days.

Question:
? Ask a question regarding your observation/phenomenon. What part are you curious about?
o Why does Coke make chicken bones rubbery?

Background:
? Describe what you learned in researching your subject in your own words (no direct quotes are allowed).
o Provide a citation(s) for where you got this information in AMA format.
? Citations are numbered in the order they appear in your writing.
? See the following link for help. http://library.nymc.edu/informatics/amastyle.cfm
o Ex. ?Coke contains lots of phosphoric and carbonic acid 1.?
? The full citation for the references should be listed as the last section of your assignment.
Hypothesis:
? Give a hypothetical answer to the question that you just asked.
o Ex. ?I hypothesize that the acid in coke makes the chicken bones rubbery.?
? Be careful what you include in your hypothesis. Remember: everything in your hypothesis must be tested for in your experiment.

Prediction:
? If your hypothesis is correct, what should be the things you might observe that you wouldn?t observe if your hypothesis were incorrect? Explain why.
? Stated in the form:
1. If my hypothesis is true?
2. then ________ should happen
3. when ________ is manipulated.
? Ex. ?If it is the acid in Coke that makes chicken bones rubbery when soaked in coke, then the chicken bones should not get rubbery when I soak them in coke that has had the acids removed from it.?

Test:
? This is where a person would carry out the manipulation described in the prediction. It is not necessary that you actually perform the test; just explain what you would do.
? Explain how you might test your prediction. Ideally, it should be a test we could perform in class, but that is not a requirement.
? Make it clear why the test actually does test the prediction. Often a test includes both an experiment and a ?control experiment?, the latter being something you compare the experiment with (see examples below).
? If your test needs an ?assay?, describe it. Ex. If you need to know whether a liquid is thicker or thinner, describe how you will measure viscocity.
? Example:
o Procedure: Clean the meat off of two raw chicken leg bones. Place each bone in a separate glass jar. In sample jar 1, cover the bone with 1 cup of Coke. In sample jar 2, cover the chicken bone with 1 cup of Coke that has had baking soda dissolved in it to result in a pH of 7. Using pH paper, check the pH of both samples 1 and 2, and record the pHs. Allow the bones to soak for 48 hours at room temperature, checking them at 24 hours and 48 hours for their flexibility. A protractor will be used to determine to what angle the bones can be bent. Record the data.
o Possible outcomes: It is possible that there will be no difference in flexibility between my two samples or that the Coke-only sample will be more flexible than the Coke + baking soda sample, and I would reject my hypothesis. It is also possible that I will detect an increase in flexibility in the Coke + baking soda sample compared to the Coke-only sample, in which case I would support my hypothesis.

References:
? List your full citations in this section in AMA format.
o Citations are numbered in text and listed in this section in the order they appear in your text.
o Please see additional examples of formatting for articles and websites here: http://library.nymc.edu/informatics/amastyle.cfm
o For example when using a section of a book (the chapter title is listed after the author name):
? 1. McGee H, Eggs. In: On Food and Cooking. 2nd ed. New York, NY. Scribner 2004: 68-73.

Notice that a proper food experiment does not consist of a proposal to ?try something? and just ?see what happens?. That?s exploration, not experimentation. As scientists, we try things because we know they will answer questions we have posed.

Please note that on your rubric for the second assignment is a score for improvement. I will be comparing your work in this assignment to the previous one to see if you incorporated my feedback.

Kitchen Experiment 2 Rubric
Dr. Plaster G101 Fall 2016

_______ A complete assignment was handed in on time following all instructions (5 pts)

_______Observation (6 pts):
?
