for election.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The result of the Senate election in 2013 has sparked debate about how<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

representative the current system is because the distribution of preferences<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

delivered Senate seats to parties with a very low primary vote. Proposals for<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

reforming the senate voting method have focused on the introduction of an<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

optional preferential system of voting for the Senate to replace the current<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

system where voting by the majority of voters \u2018above the line\u2019 largely restricts<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
