It crosses with physics, slang, everyday language, and more. As a term, \u201cheat\u201d is fairly old and diverse across different languages. In the following paragraphs, we will explore its many definitions, its etymology, and some of the everyday phrases it is used in. <\/p>\n<p>The word \u201cheat\u201d can be used as a noun or a verb. In its form as a noun, it can mean, \u201cThe quality of being hot; high temperature\u201d (<em>Oxford Dictionaries<\/em>). However, this meaning can be broken down into different areas of interest. In physics, \u201cHeat seen as a form of energy arising from the random motion of the molecules of bodies, which may be transferred by conduction, convection, or radiation,\u201d in meteorology as \u201cHot weather conditions,\u201d in a culinary sense with \u201cA source or level of heat for cooking,\u201d in terms of spice as \u201cA spicy quality in food that produces a burning sensation in the mouth,\u201d a technical explanation like \u201cThe amount of heat that is needed to cause a specific process or is evolved in such a process\u201d and \u201cA single operation of heating something, especially metal in a furnace,\u201d and even emotion: \u201cIntensity of feeling, especially of anger or excitement\u201d (<em>Oxford Dictionaries<\/em>). The word \u201cheat\u201d does not give up there in the definition department. As a verb, it stands as, \u201cMake or become hot or warm.\u201d This verb can be separated into three categories as well: \u201c(heat up) [no object] (of a person) become excited or impassioned,\u201d \u201c(heat up) [no object] Become more intense and exciting,\u201d and \u201c(archaic) [with object] Inflame; excite\u201d (<em>Oxford Dictionaries<\/em>). As you can see, though we think of \u201cheat\u201d as a simple word, it can be perceived in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we know the holistic view of its definition, let us look at where the word came from. The linguistic genealogy of \u201cheat\u201d began with the Proto-Indo European word \u201ckayd,\u201d which is a derived form of the word \u201ckay.\u201d It also meant heat or hot. \u201cKayd\u201d travelled to Proto-Germanic as \u201chait,\u201d which meant simply heat. But it became more complicated when it landed in Old English as h\u01e3te, as it had the meaning of heat, warmth, fervor, and ardor. A word with the same definition transferred to Middle English as \u201chete\u201d (<em>Wiktionary<\/em>). From \u201ckayd\u201d to \u201chete,\u201d you can see how the sound was somewhat retained, but the definitions aligned with it started off being fairly simple, got simpler, but along the way became complicated as Old English tagged more meanings onto it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeat\u201d is not just a technical word, but it is also used in common phrases often. One such phrase is, \u201cIf you can\u2019t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.\u201d Basically, it is saying that if you cannot stand the pressures of a situation, it is better that you don\u2019t take it on. It is usually used when someone is complaining about a circumstance. Another popular phrase involving \u201cheat\u201d is, \u201cin the heat of the moment.\u201d It denotes doing something when angry, upset, or engrossed. It can refer to violence, something spoken, or a sexual act. Also, there is \u201con heat\u201d or \u201cin heat.\u201d The first is the British way of going about it, and the second is the American style of saying it. It refers to when a female mammal is in the receptive period of her sexual cycle. <strong>Dipping into the ebonics dictionary, \u201cheat\u201d commonly means a weapon, especially a gun. Finally, \u201cheat\u201d can mean the intenseness or power of something; an example sentence of this concept is, \u201cMatt is taking the heat for what David did.\u201d The word \u201cheat\u201d is often used in hip hop and rap songs, and its definition in terms of slang is constantly evolving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cheat\u201d has many definitions as a noun and verb in its present form, and has gone through an arch of evolution. It began as a Proto-Indo European word, and gradually moved into Middle English, with most of its complexity being integrated into its definition within Old English.
