Research Paper Guidelines You are required to complete a 3-4 page research paper on a psychological disorder. You can choose a disorder from the Approved List of Topics. Your paper should comply with APA format. This means the paper needs to be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-font size in Times New Roman. There are other requirements for APA formatting. There is a tutorial short video on how to format your paper in an APA style. Please watch. It will help! There are also websites mentioned below that help with APA formatting. As the video indicates, APA requires a cover sheet. Since your paper is a literature review, your title for the paper should include your chosen disorder followed up by \u201cLiterature Review\u201d. For example if I chose Depression, my title is \u201cMajor Depressive Disorder: Literature Review\u201d. Your research paper should have the following sections: \u2022 Cover page \u2022 Abstract \u2022 Body of the paper (your literature review) \u2022 Reference page In order to help you organize your paper, you should have the following headings for the body of the paper: Introduction: \u2022 This area should introduce the reader briefly to you topic. You may include a brief history of how the disorder was discovered or how it has evolved over the years. Symptoms: \u2022 You need to use the DSM-V for this section. You need to detail what behaviors\/deficits the person has to be exhibit and for how long before a diagnosis can be made. \u2022 You may also want to include other disorders that are similar to your topic and thus the individual may be misdiagnosed with. Origin: \u2022 Is there a cause to the disorder? \u2022 You will find for most of the disorders, there may not be a definitive single cause but a number of theories that explain the cause of the disorders. Discuss in detail the most prominent theories. \u2022 For most of the disorders, there is a neurological component to the condition. You want to discuss how the brain of the individual with your topic is different than someone who does not have the disorder. Who does it afflict? \u2022 Gender; Age; Ethnicity; etc. Treatment: \u2022 Discuss the most prominent treatment for your topic. You will find again for most of the disorders, there is a pharmacological treatment. Make sure to discuss the medication and the side effects associated with the meds. References You will need a minimum of three references for your paper. One of your references has to be DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition). You will find this book in the VC library under the reference section. Your other reference has to be a peer-reviewed article which you can find through online VC Library. Your last resource could either be another peer reviewed article or an online site. Two great online resources are National Institute of Mental Health or the Mayo Clinic. You need to reference all information used in your research paper, referred to as in-text referencing. You have to give credit to the author of the information used in your paper. In scientific writing, paraphrasing an author\u2019s ideas is more common than using direct quotes. When you do paraphrase (writing the ideas in your own words), you need to cite the author\u2019s information, author\u2019s name and the year of publication.
