Get set.\u00a0 Go!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Call time after three minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Invite participants to discuss why some people did not pay attention to the instructions in Sentence 1. Some possible responses:\n<ol>\n<li>They were in a hurry<\/li>\n<li>They wanted to be the first one to finish<\/li>\n<li>They saw the line in the upper right hand corner for name and forgot what Sentence 1 said<\/li>\n<li>The habit of following printed instructions is ingrained<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>In our culture, we often receive contradictory messages about the need for speed vs. the need to be careful. Ask the group to think about sayings in American culture that encourage speed or being first.\u00a0 Some examples:\n<ol>\n<li>Winning isn\u2019t everything; it\u2019s the only thing<\/li>\n<li>Strike while the iron is hot<\/li>\n<li>The early bird gets the worm<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then ask participants to think about sayings in American culture that encourage carefulness or taking time. Some examples:\n<ol>\n<li>Slow and steady wins the race<\/li>\n<li>A stitch in time saves nine<\/li>\n<li>Measure twice, cut once<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ask the group to describe some situations where it is crucial to balance the need for speed and the need for carefulness. Some examples:\n<ol>\n<li>During an emergency evacuation \u2013 people must evacuate quickly but in an orderly fashion to avoid stampeding and trampling others<\/li>\n<li>At the scene of an accident \u2013 health professionals must perform quick but careful assessments to determine which injuries are life-threatening and which ones are less serious; a mistake means someone could die<\/li>\n<li>Reporting a news story about an explosion \u2013 reporters need to get information to people quickly but inaccurate information can cause a panic<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Stress that sometimes in our drive to win or to be first, we overlook critical information or make decisions without considering important evidence.<\/li>\n<li>Stress the importance of listening carefully, reading carefully, and making sure you understand what is being asked before you start on a task.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adapted from Scannell, E., &amp; Newstrom, J.
