Continuing on with guided imagery a foreground question would be: &#8220;In adult patients undergoing surgery, how does guided imagery compared with music therapy affect analgesia use within the first 24 hours post-op?&#8221; It is a specific, well-defined question that can only be answered by searching the current literature for studies comparing these two interventions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You will be looking for overview\/background information and you will need to answer a\u00a0<strong>BACKGROUND QUESTION<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0general knowledge about a disorder or topic. \u00a0\u201cWhat you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Background information may be found in sources such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reference book entries<\/li>\n<li>textbooks, chapters, appendices<\/li>\n<li>drug monographs, guides to diagnostic tests<\/li>\n<li>the library<\/li>\n<li>selected in the health sciences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Asks for general information about a clinical issue<\/li>\n<li>Usually has two components:\n<ol>\n<li>The starting place of the question (e.g., what, where, when, why, and how)<\/li>\n<li>The outcome of interest<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Broader in scope than a foreground (PICOT) question<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Foreground questions (PICOT format)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Asks for specific scientific evidence about diagnosing, treating, or educating patients<\/li>\n<li>The focus is on specific knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Use of PICOT format is recommended for a focused literature search<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A Background search also called a Scoping Search:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Background Questions:\u00a0 This is where you do an extensive exploration of the topic of choice\u2014with a disease issue ie: heart disease or depression the following questions must be answered.\u00a0 With a clinical issue the exploration must be exhaustive based on the topic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background questions,\u00a0<\/strong>ask about general knowledge about a disorder or topic.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>A<strong>\u00a0scoping search<\/strong>\u00a0begins to locate general knowledge about a topic.<\/p>\n<p>Expert opinions, pre-synthesized and pre-appraised guidelines, summaries.<\/p>\n<p>To insure a complete understanding of the issue a clinical background question would include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Definition<\/li>\n<li>Epidemiology<\/li>\n<li>Clinical Presentation<\/li>\n<li>Complications<\/li>\n<li>Diagnosis<\/li>\n<li>Conclusion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Background questions\u00a0are considerably broader and when answered, provide general knowledge. \u201cWhat do I know about this?\u201d\u00a0 For example, \u201cguided imagery\u201d.
