I, Sec. 2). Contrast this with the original constitutional language for the other house of Congress, \u201cThe Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof for six Years\u2026\u201d (Art. I, Sec. 3). The phrase \u201cchosen by the Legislature\u201d was changed to \u201celected by the people\u201d by the 17th Amendment, but not until 1912. In other words, from the beginning the House of Representatives was intended to be exactly what its name suggests \u2013representative of the people. (Note that in 2010 the Tea Party, and some Republican politicians, called for repeal of the 17th Amendment, eliminating the popular vote for Senators. While most Republican politicians have backed away from that view, many Tea Party chapters continue to demand its repeal.) \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.5px;color: #444444;font-family: Lato, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px\">Textbook models suggest how members of the House of Representatives may fulfill their constitutional duty to \u201crepresent\u201d \u2013 the delegate model, the trustee model, the oversight model, and the service model. A weakness of these models is that they ignore the pervasive influence of interest groups, partisanship, and political money (campaign contributions) on the behavior of congressional reps. To what extent do these factors interfere with effective representation?\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.5px;color: #444444;font-family: Lato, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px\">Before writing your initial post, review the\u00a0assigned resources. Summarize your representative\u2019s position on this focus issue as described on his or her website or illustrated by legislation sponsored by your rep. \u00a0Be concrete and specific. \u00a0Avoid vague generalities like \u201cmy representative is for jobs\u201d or \u201cmy Congressman is for national security.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.5px;color: #444444;font-family: Lato, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px\">With respect to this focus issue, evaluate your representative\u2019s performance as a representative of the people in your legislative district. Justify your assessment from two perspectives:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 10.5px;color: #444444;font-family: Lato, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px\">\n<li>How well does your rep\u2019s position on that issue reflect \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0your district\u2019s likely preferences or broad interests on the issue? \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Support your inferences about the district with fact-based evidence \u2013 not \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0just your opinion about the district or your rep\u2019s position on the focus \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0issue. Demonstrate how your rep does or does not reflect his or her \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0constituency on this issue. Consider your rep\u2019s committee memberships and \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0seniority.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Discuss fact-based evidence about how interest groups, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0political party loyalty, or campaign money may influence your \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0representative. Can these influences weaken his or her effectiveness as a \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0true \u201crepresentative\u201d of the district? Consider whether the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0district is considered a \u201csafe\u201d seat or a competitive district. Put on \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0your critical thinking cap to respond to this aspect of the question.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.5px;color: #444444;font-family: Lato, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px\">Fully respond to all parts of the question. Write in your own words. Your initial must be at least 200-250 words. Support your position with APA citations to\u00a0<em>two\u00a0<\/em>or more of the assigned resources required for this discussion. Please be sure that you demonstrate understanding of these resources, integrate them into your argument, and cite them properly. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 10.5px;color: #444444;font-family: Lato, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px\">By Day 7, respond to at least two of your classmates\u2019 initial posts.
