This analysis will demonstrate their understanding that society and individuals are mutually created in the process of social interaction, sociologists use specific concepts to analyze social interaction, and that relationships are formed in different social contexts.

Assignment Objective: Students will choose a movie that is based on a true story, observe, and then analyze social interactions in the video. Specifically, students will

observe the interactions between individuals and the groups in which they participate
record their observations as data
interpret the data using sociological concepts and theories
Preparation (15 points)
Reading: Chapters on Culture and Media, Socialization and Social Construction, Social Control and Deviance, Stratification, Gender, Race.

Collect Data: Choose a movie (online or DVD) that is based on a true story. The Movie List is below the instructions in an attachment. It has a number of appropriate movies to choose from.

As you watch the video, record what you see and hear as individuals interact with each other. You will submit your notes with the report.

Choose 2 interactions (e.g. conversations, arguments, or meetings) between people.

One interaction will be between people who are engaging in the socialization process.
One interaction will be between people who are committing and/or experiencing a type of deviance.
Write down the context of the interactions. Where were they? (building, rural, urban, region, nation, etc.) When did they take place? (year, season, during a significant social event)
When you record your observations of the interactions, note specific characteristics of the individuals who are interacting:
age
gender
race/ethnicity
status in an organization (e.g. student or instructor)
anything else you notice about the individual (e.g. clothing, hair-style, verbal language, body language)
Record the names of groups and organizations that you observe
social networks
informal groups
formal groups or organizations
size of groups
strength of the ties between individuals in the groups
Tips for recording your data and remaining objective:
write down exactly what you see and hear, do NOT write down your impression or feelings, or beliefs about the interaction. Do not write down that someone is angry. Write down the things they say or do that tell you the person is angry. For example, if people are arguing, record what they say, facial expressions or gestures to each other. Be specific. Record the details. This is a way to remain objective.
pay attention to how individuals react to each other. Do they simply state an idea or feeling and then listen to the other person, or do they respond to each other’s ideas and feelings with subtle queues such as smiles, hand gestures, or eye rolls? Write these down. They may indicate agreement or disagreement, or something else. You won’t know until you see the whole movie and put all of the interactions into the context.
Report Outline
Read the questions completely. Include the underlined concepts in your responses.

A. References/Works Cited (5 points)
When you use quotes from the book, an article, or video, make sure you place the words in quotation marks and include internal references to the source.

This means, at the end of the sentence with the quote, type the author’s name, the date of the publication and page number where you found the quote. Put parentheses around this information. It should look something like this (Conley 2017, p. 275).

You need a bibliographic citation for these quotes at the end of the report. If you are not sure how to write a citation, please see the instructions at the library’s website. Click HERE to see a library guide for citations.

F. I cannot open Word Perfect documents. If I receive a document electronically, and cannot open it, I will notify you and it will be considered late.
When you save your document, be sure to label the file with your last name and the name of the assignment. Example: JRodriguezReport1.doc
Grading Rubric
Read the questions completely. Include the underlined concepts in your responses.
I will evaluate your report and award points according to the answers you give to each question. If you answer half the questions, you may receive no more than half the points. The points assigned to each question are listed with the instructions for writing.
Because this is a report and not an essay, you can simply write your responses in the order of the questions. Each question can be a separate paragraph.
Demonstrate your understanding of sociology by including key concepts from the textbook, definitions and/or examples of them that show your understanding of the concepts and how to apply them to the topic of the report. If you include a definition of a concept, be sure to put quotation marks around the definition and cite the source (i.e. textbook).
Use college level grammar, expression, phrasing and organization. I do not look for fancy writin’, but clear writing is very important.
