W. Higginson. You\u2019ll notice that Todd and Higginson assigned the poem the title &#8220;The Chariot,&#8221; regularized Dickinson\u2019s punctuation, omitted a stanza, and changed many words.<br \/>\n&#8220;The Chariot&#8221;<br \/>\nBecause I could not stop for Death,<br \/>\nHe kindly stopped for me;<br \/>\nThe carriage held but just ourselves<br \/>\nAnd Immortality.<br \/>\nWe slowly drove, he knew no haste,<br \/>\nAnd I had put away<br \/>\nMy labor, and my leisure too,<br \/>\nFor his civility.<br \/>\nWe passed the school where children played,<br \/>\nTheir lessons scarcely done;<br \/>\nWe passed the fields of gazing grain,<br \/>\nWe passed the setting sun.<br \/>\nWe paused before a house that seemed<br \/>\nA swelling of the ground;<br \/>\nThe roof was scarcely visible.<br \/>\nThe cornice but a mound.<br \/>\nSince then &#8217;tis centuries but each<br \/>\nFeels shorter than the day<br \/>\nI first surmised the horses&#8217; heads<br \/>\nWere toward eternity.<br \/>\nWrite a one- to two-page response paper about the differences between this poem and the version that appears in The Norton Anthology of American Literature.
