Paragraph Assignment
\nLength: 200 words;
\nWrite a 200-word paragraph that makes a claim about the use of ethos, logos, or pathos in either
\nStephen King\u2019s \u201cWhy We Crave Horror Movies\u201d or Bertrand Russell\u2019s \u201cWhat I Have Lived
\nFor.\u201d Choose one, not both.
\nYour paragraph must have the following features:
\n– a topic sentence that begins the paragraph and contains a topic plus a controlling idea
\nThat is, it must make a claim about the text.
\n– supporting sentences that provide details from the essay to illustrate
\n– supporting sentences that explain how the details achieve their effect
\n– good coherence (Sentences must connect somehow. Consider using transition words
\nsuch as \u201cone,\u201d \u201cfirst,\u201d \u201canother,\u201d \u201calso,\u201d \u201cfinally,\u201d \u201cmost important,\u201d and so on.)
\n– a concluding sentence\/comment of some sort (This should not be the same as your topic
\nsentence. Ask yourself the \u201cso what?\u201d question to come up with a possible conclusion.)
\nYour assignment must be properly formatted according to MLA style (see guidelines provided
\nbelow).
\nGive your paragraph a title. Capitalize all words except articles (a\/an\/the), prepositions (location
\nwords like in, at, to, from, with, of, on), coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so),
\nand the \u201cto\u201d in infinitives (to work, to dream)\u2014unless this word is at the beginning of a title or subtitle or is the very last word in a title, in which case it should be capitalized. Always capitalize
\nin a title both words in a hyphenated word (as in \u201cPart-Time Employment\u201d).
\nAttach a works cited page at the end, treating the essay as though you saw it in the original text
\nthat I copied it from.
\nRemember to double space the works cited page entry and use a hanging indent if the type takes
\nup more than one line. Indent the second line by 1\/2 inch (one tab space).
\nPlease provide a word count at the bottom of the page. Count only the words in the paragraph
\nitself, including any words quoted from the essay. Do not count your name and course number
\ninformation or the information on the works cited page.
