The Assignment:<\/p>\n
This assignment is in many ways inspired by the parodies of Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s<\/p>\n
Mona Lisa. For this essay, you will choose a topic or image and discuss how the<\/p>\n
expression thereof has changed over time. You will choose 3-5 examples<\/p>\n
throughout its iconographic history that you feel best illustrate how the<\/p>\n
concept\/image has evolved over time. What do the variations on the theme<\/p>\n
suggest about the cultures\/time periods in which they appear? You will be<\/p>\n
including the images in the body of your paper, so the emphasis here is not on<\/p>\n
the iconography itself, but rather on the cultural context; that is, while you will<\/p>\n
spend some time describing the images, you will spend less time describing the<\/p>\n
icon as you will connecting that image to its time and culture.<\/p>\n
For example, you might discuss the evolution of the concept of Hell by using the<\/p>\n
following images:<\/p>\n
What do these four images tell us about the cultures which produced them:<\/p>\n
their priorities, their beliefs, etc.<\/p>\n
Another approach is to take a single image, such as the Mona Lisa, and<\/p>\n
demonstrated the ways it has been adapted into various cultures, again<\/p>\n
connecting each use to the time and culture in which it was produced.<\/p>\n

Then, you will use theLibrary Databases and\/or the Library Catalogue to locate, read, and annotate three different secondary sources that are related to your chosen story and\/or your paper topic. For each of the three sources you find, you will need to write: -An MLA-style citation.See pages 407-462 for more information on MLA formatting. Citations are like mathematical formulas \u2013you just need to plug in the variables, such as the author\u2019s name, the work\u2019s title, and so on. -A summary paragraph. -To write a good summary, you will probably need to write about 5-7 sentences.
