What it lacks is research questions. EXAMPLE

The assignment for the past week works on developing the problem statement, purpose, and research questions. Given the importance of these elements for properly centering your study, I thought it would be valuable going into week #5 to reemphasize the point of good language here and the value to your study.

Problem Statement

The PS should convey a problem or GAP in the literature. You should work to show exactly how this is a problem or GAP that is unknown to research. Work your way broadly to the specific sub-area of which you are interested. The PS is easily identified as it can start: “It is not known.” In qualitative research work to show what the relationship is between the phenomena in question, and make sure that you focus the language on what you are actually planning to do. Here is an example of a case study idea:

It is not known whether or how teachers feel the introduction of common core math standards improve student scores on standardized tests in Northern Louisiana

This would set the problem squarely in the geographic area in which you will study and focuses on what the hypothetical researcher would be interested in studying in terms of his/her sample-teachers.

Purpose Statement

The PS should dovetail with the problem statement. This statement should explain how you will fill the GAP denoted by the problem statement. It should align or the language should be the same and convey a logical sequence. Using my previous example.

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore whether and how teachers perceive that the introduction of common core math standards improve student scores on standardized tests in Northern Louisiana.

Notice that I aligned the language with the problem statement, include the type of study I am going to undertake, express that my intent is to study whether teachers feel this way and how this relationship works, the phenomena in question (teacher perceptions and student success) and the geographic area.

Research Questions

The research questions (RQs) align with the purpose statement. These are statements that express how you will pursue or explore the purpose statement. These should use aligned, qualitative language and most importantly, focus on what you can do (i.e. what kind of data you have) and what you need to do in order to properly explore the purpose. You should generally aim for at least a few RQs, as you need to be precise in the relationships you plan to explore in order to properly answer your purpose. When you eventually explore your Results in the dissertation, it is critical that your RQs are clear. You ultimately go back to these when you explore the themes that emerged from the data to see if and how you achieved your purpose and how these results make sense for the literature.
26/09/2018 13:42 (GMT-5 Eastern Time) By: You
Feedback from previous paper you wrote: Please fix that in this current assignment:

Problem Statement

The PS should convey a problem or GAP in the literature.
