You will be choosing a concept that is important to Jon Krakauer\u2019s Into the Wild and writing a 3-4 page essay about how it is represented in the book. You may choose to include historical and cultural perceptions of your chosen idea, but outside research is not required (unless you make claims that need to be supported) and you will be focusing on its literary representation in the book. Your essay must go beyond the surface (or denotative meaning) of the concept and \u201cdig into\u201d its deeper connotations. Use the following questions as inspiration as you write your thesis statement: what is your chosen concept? How is it perceived, and by whom? What is its role in Into the Wild, and perhaps how does this relate to its role in our cultural imagination? How\/why does this idea have imaginative power over certain people? This writing task will require you to perform close readings of, analyze, and cite from passages of Into the Wild and consider the concept creatively and thoughtfully.
