No additional references.

ONE article, answer must in owe words

question:

• What is the author’s thesis?
• What assumptions support that thesis?

For example an Ayres (1999) assumption is we cannot deal with problems we are causing without grouping them into four megatrends. He gives reasons why he makes that assumption. He also assumes everything is interconnected. Again he says why. So should you but briefly
Some papers seem to me to be assuming that free market capitalism is evil but do not always say so. That assumption is unwritten. Look for unwritten assumptions as well as written ones. Higher grade for finding them

• What are the arguments made to support the thesis?

ex. Ayres (1999) again. He assumes we will keep increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. His arguments for this are various but he gives statistics of historic rates to prove the rate is increasing. His assumption is it will continue like this unless we do things to halt this increase. An argument showing we will do this would be if he showed tree planting was increasing or if he showed solar, wind, hydro, nuclear power generations is increasing and/or electric car use is increasing.

o Are the arguments clearly made?

A simple yes or no will not impress me
Say why they are clear or unclear to you,Do they make sense? Are they true?Is the argument offensive or repressive to anyone? On balance do you find the arguments leave no doubt or questions in your mind regarding the article’s thesis?

Are they adequately supported?

. Focus on the author(s) main arguments not a list of all of them if they have a lot.
tell if they are or not and why so?
ex. “Ayres (1999) argues that chemicals require testing before release but never says who is to do the testing, who would pay for it, how it would be tested (human or animal?), or how detailed the testing would be. I liked Ayres’ (1999) argument and it was well supported with strong correlational statistics except I am unsure how we are to deal with 560 years of back testing while introducing new chemicals; the majority of which are essential for human progress”

Do you agree with the arguments? Why/why not?

ex how to answer: “Overall I found Ayres’ (1999) arguments compelling for all his spikes except for population. Ignoring human desire and religion seems to me to be a fatal flaw in the argument. The fact is that in 2018 human population for most of the world is now below replacement level and still falling [In the final you’d reference this but here assertion are fine as long as reasonably true]. The gains in population is entirely due to gains in life expectancy. Perhaps it is not the numbers of people that is an issue but their lifestyles?”

Hope you see how your response here is key rather than finding a citation to prove your response.

o What are the strengths/weaknesses of the argument and conclusions?

I would do this as you detail the arguments and discuss if they are adequately supported and agreeable to you. Avoid repeating yourself though

Conclusions. Do not forget to address the final paragraphs of the article

ex: “Ayres’ (1999) conclusions are linked strongly with both his thesis and his arguments. For example his call for individual actions fits well with his belief these trends cannot be dealt with except by multiple independent actions. I find myself agreeing to this but the megatrends will only be reversed by Governmental action. Without individual action first I feel this will not occur”

• What are the implications of the article for health, nurses and nursing?

. This is the major part of the paper
Up to 5 foci:
Me
Canadian Nursing
World Nursing
Human Health
Earth health

Do 2-3 paragraphs here. I’d [Use “I would” in the papers] suggest 50% of the paper length or more
ex. “Ayres (1999) is a wake up call (“clarion call” is more scholarly) for nurses to see the interconnectedness of every human activity. Only by advocating to politicians can we as nurses have a large effect on these spikes but as individuals we can self limit our consumption and encourage our friends and neighbours to do the same. I will now try to think before I buy and think before I use and definitely think before I throw away after reading Ayres (1999)”

pick one artilce:

Sicchia, S.R. & Maclean, H.
