This is a generally well-written first draft; however, it is problematic in a couple of respects:
?Your focus should be on the lasting impact of slavery on some particular aspect of contemporary society; therefore, your thesis must reference a specific area of impact?one that is humanities-based (i.e. art, history, music, literature, or philosophy). In its current form, your thesis rather broadly asserts an impact society. This is not an appropriate thesis for this assignment. You must focus on a specific contemporary impact. For instance, you might focus on the impact of slavery on contemporary African American sculpture. Please revise both your thesis and the focus of your essay. Failure to do so can result is serious grade deductions on your final essay. I am concerned that this draft does not demonstrate attention to prior feedback.
?Much of your essay is expository rather than argumentative. Remember, exposition should only be employed in the service of argument. Avoid writing a simple history of slavery or a simple catalog of social injustice. These things are largely irrelevant if they are not tethered to specific argument.
?Your introduction must be a single paragraph and it must conclude with your thesis statement. You do not need to provide a rationale and your thesis should not be presented as a sentence contained under a separate heading. Please carefully review my handouts on introduction and thesis writing.
