Complaints to Mayor Pat<\/p>\n

The Ulmus forest has been open for recreation for several month now. Everything seems to be running smoothly. Some areas have been designated as protected habitat but otherwise the forest is open for recreation. Users of the forest drop a small user fee in a tube at the trail heads and parking lots on the property. These fees have helped with management and volunteer groups are helping to maintain the property along side the town.<\/p>\n

The town put in a few tent campsite pads and a composting toilet in the forest to bring in some extra revenue. As a result the town has seen an increase in tourism around the forest. The recreation has not come without its issues though. Mayor Pat is getting letters and e-mail complaints from those who are recreating in the forest. Some groups are not getting along well with each other and not afraid to let Mayor Pat know about it. As a result of the complaints Mayor Pat decides to hold another town hall meeting about the Ulmus.<\/p>\n

Prior to sharing your complaints and concerns with Mayor Pat find some organizations that support your kind of recreation (example- Fisherman are supported by Trout Unlimited and the National Wildlife Federation).<\/p>\n

Think critically about the concerns someone in your role may have when using the forest.<\/p>\n

1) What group or groups would you be most in conflict with and why?<\/p>\n

What are some issues associated with those groups (example-Fisherman- over fishing, erosion on stream banks, litter, pollution to ponds and lakes etc.) (Review the overview of forest recreation conflicts for ideas). What are the top 2 issues you would care about in regard to concerns with the conflicting group?<\/p>\n

2) Why should your group and complaints be taken seriously?<\/p>\n

What sort of resources do people who prefer your type of forest recreation have at their disposal (ie- groups like Trout Unlimited could tell you how much money they contribute through their recreation or efforts made to help protect forests etc.)?<\/p>\n

**This information validates your groups use of the forest. Mayor Pat may have to eliminate some recreation use from the forest because of complaints. Why should your group be allowed to stay?**<\/p>\n

3) Lastly you need to make some management suggestions to Mayor Pat.<\/p>\n
