You will analyze the cultural values that are embedded in the event to help make sense of what is taking place from an intercultural perspective. This is a beginning introduction to intercultural communication and understanding the event.

The objective in this paper is to analyze a current event or living culture by utilizing concepts, terms, or theories from your study of intercultural communication in a way that helps advance understanding of the topic you are examining. You will analyze the cultural values that are embedded in the event to help make sense of what is taking place from an intercultural perspective. This is a beginning introduction to intercultural communication and understanding the event.

1. Your first task will be to identify an event, issue, or topic in the news that engages content from beginning intercultural communication that requires analysis or understanding based on terms from intercultural communication. You might focus on a current event, such as the upcoming election or an issue, like the controversy taking place in the United States over the influx of young undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America. You could also examine recent social media campaigns to protest or inspire awareness of cultural tendencies, like the Black Lives Matter campaign or raising women?s salaries.

2. You will need to research the event, issue or topic thoroughly in order to provide background and explanation of it in this paper. You must make reference to and provide citations for the sources you consult, and provide evidence that you have done sufficient research. Be sure to explain why you feel that this topic is relevant to the study of intercultural communication.

3. Next, you will apply knowledge and analysis of your event issue, or topic, that can help develop further understanding of the topic. You might, for example, analyze the various components of language in use in a campaign or issue, or demonstrate how Hofstede or Kluckhohn?s value dimension are influencing the cultural understanding. Regardless of the approach you take, the paper MUST demonstrate at least three concepts, terms or theories listed below. In your paper, you might consider (but are not limited to) questions such as the following:

? What are the rituals, stories told, clothing items, or common phrases shared by this cultural group?
? What values are core to this cultural group?
? What are some of the main differences between this culture or cultural event and your own world?
? What are some communication style differences between this culture and your own?
? How are nonverbal and other language patterns used in this culture?
? How are social roles such as gender and family viewed in this culture?
? Does the history of the community/region/nation in which members of this culture live appear prominent in cultural patterns?
? How does this culture?s history influence perception of and communication between this and your own culture?
? What are some of the stereotypes that members of your culture hold about members of the culture that you are studying? Do they appear to hold any truth?
? What are some of the stereotypes that members of the culture you study hold about your culture? Do these appear to hold any truth?
? What would someone going to work or study with members of this culture need to know?

Please note that these are only suggestions and you should feel free to develop other/additional questions that you feel are important or interest

In your paper, you can use these concepts of intercultural communication to analyze the event, choose any or more.

? Barriers to communication
? nonverbal communication
? Culture, subculture, co-culture, subgroup communication
? cultures within cultures
? The Hofstede Dimensions
? Strodtbeck?s Theory
? Value Orientation Theory
? Stereotypes/prejudice/racism/ Ethnocentrism
? Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
? Culture shock/immigration

At the core, this paper will ask you to prove:
1. Can you define and give examples of three of the inter-cultural theories
2. Can you summarize a cultural event or conflict and link that cultural event to the theories
3. Can you explain a theory about how to understand what is going on in that cultural event by using the theories
4. Can you write an organized and clear essay which makes the points you intend to make.

A) Introduction

Your introduction should clearly state the main topic and/or thesis that your paper will address. A thesis is the argument or main point that you will develop and/or defend through the paper (for example, ?We learn race as a set of social and cultural expectations that are expressed in language. This paper focuses on pragmatics as an approach to help understand race as it is presented in the media surrounding an event like the Black Lives Matter movement.?) You should explain what you will discuss in the paper; why you are interested in what you discuss and/or why it is important; and how you will discuss it and/or what you hope to accomplish in the paper. You may also provide a brief overview of the paper (for example: ?First, I examine events and the reaction audiences to campaigns like ?Mansplainnig?. Next, I examine these statements with reference to language terms and concepts from Jandt. Finally, I conclude that values affect many aspects of culture and intercultural relations as speakers and communities understand and act according to dominant beliefs about gender identity.?

B) Main body

The body of the paper develops the argument or discussion. It presents the information you have gathered in your research, integrates it and synthesizes it towards addressing the main topic or thesis that you state in the introduction. It should be well organized, shift clearly from one main point to another, and use examples from your research to develop your ideas. The body of the essay is also a good place to discuss terms, concepts or ideas from course readings and lectures and how they help you make sense of the information you have gathered. The body of the essay should be coherent, well organized and focused. It is where you bring attention to the good research you have done, and use it to make your main point(s).

C) Conclusion

The conclusion should summarize the main points of the paper; briefly restate the main topic and/or thesis; and suggest how and if these have been demonstrated or proven (for example, ?Various concepts related to intercultural conflict help clarify the current debates on immigration and the ?border crisis.? It should also address any larger questions that are identified as part of each term paper topic. This is also a good place for any personal observations or comments you wish to make on your topic or on the issues you talk about. You may also suggest areas for future research, things you wished you had learned but did not, and any final thoughts on the experience you had with the research.

1. Structure: The paper must be coherent, organized effectively and follow a discernible logic, including an introduction, a main body and a conclusion. Length of 6-7 pages is required.

2. Research: The paper should be built on a solid foundation of research that follows the instructions as laid out in the assignment; i.e. it must be clear that you have consulted, analyzed and/or utilized sources ? whether from the course text or others ? and it must be clear where these sources have informed your points. You must demonstrate where the writing and thought taken from your sources begin and end, and where you have made reference to and applied them: this means citation. In all cases, evidence of sufficient research must be presented, by integrating and using good examples from your research, with citations and documentation.

3. Strength of Application/Argument: The paper should represent your best effort to incorporate theories and concepts of intercultural communication to make your points. You should be brief and concise, but also seek to bring your research into larger frameworks formed by the theoretical and scholarly knowledge that we learn in class. You should demonstrate how the terms and ideas you discuss are relevant to your work. You should show also that your research helps develop understanding of intercultural communication.

4. Quality: The quality of writing and presentation should be the highest that you can attain. Your paper should demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and clarity. It should represent your best effort to write clearly and effectively, using complete sentences and following high standards for grammar, punctuation and spelling.

5.
In short, your paper should meet the following criteria:

? It must be roughly 6-7 pages in length
? It must follow standards for academic writing (typed, double-spaced, using standard font size and margins, with page numbers and a title)
? You MUST make reference to and apply terms and/or concepts from a beginners stand point of intercultural communication
? As sources will be used, references and/or a Works Cited must be included, and in-text citations, endnotes or footnotes must be provided
? You do not need to include a title page
? It must be proofread carefully

Share this:

<a rel="nofollow" data-shared="sharing-twitter-13066" class="share-twitter sd-button share-icon no-text" ="/current-intercultural-communication/?share=twitter" target="_blank" title="Click to share on Twitter">Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)

<a rel="nofollow" data-shared="sharing-facebook-13066" class="share-facebook sd-button share-icon no-text" ="/current-intercultural-communication/?share=facebook" target="_blank" title="Click to share on Facebook">Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

<a rel="nofollow" data-shared="sharing-google-13066" class="share-google-plus-1 sd-button share-icon no-text" ="/current-intercultural-communication/?share=google-plus-1" target="_blank" title="Click to share on Google+">Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)

Related

‘ ‘ 0 0 Services Current Intercultural Communication The objective in this paper is to analyze a current event or living culture by utilizing concepts, terms, or theories from your study of intercultural communication in a way that helps advance Read More …

["post-30503","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry
["GET
