Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

For two of the films we view in this course during the semester, you will prepare a brief paper whose purpose will be to introduce the film to the other members of the class.\u00a0 During the class period following the viewing of the film, you will lead a discussion of the film, working from questions you prepare following the viewing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Content & Organization<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The paper should contain the following sections:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Notable cast and crew list, to include the producer, director, screenwriter,<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    cinematographer\/director of photography, and actors playing the major speaking roles.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

      \n
    1. For five of these individuals (including at least one cast member and one crew member)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      a single paragraph about the creative career of each.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Information about the origins of the screenplay \u2013 was the story original with the<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        screenwriter, or was it adapted from another work (e.g., a novel or play)?\u00a0 If so,<\/p>\n

        provide a brief description of that source work, including its author, and indicate major<\/p>\n

        ways in which the film adaptation departed from the original.<\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

          \n
        1. A brief synopsis of the film, to include major plot and subplots as appropriate. The scope<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          of this synopsis should be similar that of a published popular review to avoid \u201cgiving<\/p>\n

          away\u201d endings or plot twists or otherwise ruining the enjoyment of the film for others.<\/p>\n

          (We\u2019ll take care of that in the discussion.)<\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Information about the history of the film\u2019s production \u2013 its \u201cbackstory.\u201d\u00a0 Include<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            difficulties in financing and casting, production and editing, censorship and exhibition.<\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Place the film in the context of the time period in which it was released.\u00a0 Are there plot or<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              narrative devices the filmmaker(s) used that are significant to the handling of the subject<\/p>\n

              matter?\u00a0 How was it regarded by audiences and critics at the time?<\/p>\n

               <\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Place the film in a more recent context. How do film scholars and fans regard it in<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                retrospect?<\/p>\n

                 <\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. Notwithstanding anything said in #6 or #7, a simple, one-sentence statement that begins,<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  \u201cThis film is significant to the history of film because\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

                   <\/p>\n

                  Sources<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  This paper is intended as a research work.\u00a0 You should consult a minimum of five non-internet<\/p>\n

                  sources, including books on film or media\/culture, reviews or preview articles from such<\/p>\n

                  sources as The New York Times<\/em>, Rolling Stone<\/em>, Variety<\/em>, Entertainment Weekly<\/em>, and Newsweek<\/em>.\u00a0 Internet-only sources (those not connected to a conventionally-edited source such as newspaper or magazine) are not acceptable.<\/p>\n

                   <\/p>\n

                  You should provide a bibliography of these and cite them as appropriate in your paper.<\/p>\n

                  Discussion Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
