Each student chooses a group such as helping children in Africa, helping educate children in m”orocco etc..

I was part of a group that helped an all girls school in Ethiopia. Basically we would meet once a week and talk about thing like fundraisers for the school in Ethipoia and in general raising awareness around campus for the problems that they have (no money, no food, bad education, etc). At one point during the year my group travelled to Ethiopia to spend a week there and educate the children, do activities with them and so on. Since I did not go I will have to do the following assignment:

Write a 5-10 page (12 point font, double spaced) reflection that addresses the following topics:

Explain the context (economic, political, religious, social, environmental, etc.) that necessitates the existence of your service group.

Explain the problems for young girls in Ethiopia: bad/no education, no money, often no parents then talk about the all girls school that was established there and explain how it solves these problems. Then talk about the service group at our school and how we are like an extra hand in all of this by raising money and donating it to them, sending them supplies like paper, pens etc.

To what extent do you personally believe in the mission of your service group? Be honest! What are your concerns about its work? What does the organization do well? How did you reach your conclusions about its effectiveness? Provide researched evidence to back-up your conclusions.

Say something like that the mission of our service group is great. Explain the mission (something like helping young misfortunate girls in Africa do gain a good education and become strong and independent adults). Maybe one concerns you could talk about is how we should visit them more than one a year so we have more interaction with them. For what the organization does well say something like giving the girls hope that they can make it life (obviously not in those words – more formal). For how I reached my conclusions say that I talked with my classmates that went on the trip and they told me the felt like they were helping the girl a lot in giving them hope etc..

In what ways have you individually contributed to your group’s efforts? Be honest!

I have contributed to my groups efforts by helpining organize a lot of fundraisers throughout the school year such as bake sales, trivia games, and no dress code days (we have uniform and students can pay on some days to not wear uniform – the money then goes to a service group). I have also contributed by making a lot of my friends aware of the problems that exist in Ethiopia so basically bringing more attention to the service group and the problems in Ethiopia themselves.

Do you agree with the statement “Seeing is believing?” Why or why not? Put differently, are you able to learn the same lessons having not traveled/participated? Why/why not?

Honestly idk. I don’t even know what they mean with “lessons”. Ill ask my teacher and get back to you on this one.

To what extent has your participation the Global Service Program helped you develop empathy for others? Be honest!

Since I have ben in a service group for 3 years now you can say that I was able to gain insight in to many different cultures and the problems they face which developed empathy for others for me.

To what extent do you believe in the statement “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.”? What responsibility do you have towards others in need?

Another one on which im going to have to get back to you about it

Write a short story in which you imagine yourself the protagonist of your own Service Learning trip. What do you see and experience? Describe your encounters with people on this trip. Please research the details of your particular Service Learning mission so as to portray your trip with accuracy and nuance.

Basically make up your own thing. I think easiest would be helping uneducated children in Africa. Say something like you imagine yourself going to a really uncivilized place where there is no education because of a lack of money and that you were there helping the children, teaching them basic stuff to help them further in life or whatever.

Far from being limited to these questions, the reflection should address any insights gleaned from participation in the Global Service Program, including criticisms or concerns.

Extra stuff: 1st person perspective is ok/recommended I think, In 12th grade so good writing but not too sophisticated

Background info: at our school we have this program called service learning.
