Game Changers
showcase different companies that have ethical dilemmas and problems, that affect individuals, companies and societies. I did not want to make you cynical, because that is the last thing I want you to be. Angry? Sad? Outraged? Surprised? Yes, because those feelings usually make people want to improve things. You don’t have to change the world right away, you can start with yourself, your family, friends, your community… Anyway, this week we will concentrate on companies that are making a positive difference. There are plenty of them out there, but people don’t talk about them too much. I would like to change that. Share your personal experiences, do research and post names of companies and short description why you think they deserve to be recognized. What makes them such a good company? Think about their human resources and other social policies (people), their environmental impact (ecological) and don’t forget that they should still be sustainable in economic terms, too.

Don’t fall into trap of some websites that claim to list the most ethical companies (like this: http://ethisphere.com/worlds-most-ethical/wme-honorees/) while these companies can be considered more ethical than industry average, that doesn’t tell anything. B-Corporation seems better, you should check their website (http://www.bcorporation.net/what-are-b-corps)
1) METHOD – I don’t know too much about this company but everything I read about them sounds very good. Their website (http://methodhome.com/about-us/our-promise/) has a lot of stuff that resonates with me. They talk about transparency, which I have mentioned several times. They are also on B-corp list. I first started buying Method products when I realized they provide re-fills for their dishwasher/laundry detergents, hand washes etc. and I thought that was cheaper & more environmentally friendly. Later I found out that they recycle a lot, they use ocean plastic etc. They seem pretty good to me.

2) PATAGONIA – I think Patagonia is relatively well known company, at least for outdoor enthusiats. They have been hailed as one of the most ethical companies in their category for decades. How many times have you heard salesperson asking you NOT to buy items if you don’t really need them. That happens in Patagonia. They also donate for good causes.

3) WHOLE FOODS – They provide mostly organic non-GMO products, with higher prices. They claim to be good for the customers, their employees and community. I have been to several Whole Foods locations and I have to say they stand out from their competitors positively (if you forget the prices!). I think Whole Foods has proven that you can grow and be economically sound, and still do good. Their website talks more about their core values: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/mission-values/core-values

It is actually more difficult to find good (well known) companies than one might think. Obviously, when it comes to local mom&pop stores it is relatively easy but let’s try to find some bigger companies that are truly good. Someone mentioned in my previous class that “my local Chili’s is really good, they are donating in different charities etc.” and that is great, but that is likely to be local managers project rather than general policy for Chili’s.

I provided few websites and examples above, and I have used Whole Foods as example of something good – one of my ex-students sent me this: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/06/24/1396100/-Think-Whole-Foods-is-a-ripoff-It-s-worse-than-you-thought?

It seems that they have some unsustaible policies there as well!

I recently bought Newman’s Own products just because I got interested in the story and the fact they give all profits after taxes to charities. Products were normal quality and they tasted pretty much like competitors but prices were a tad higher. I like the idea – who does this these days? I mean, works for non-profit? Check their website for more information: http://www.newmansown.com/charity/
is it better to buy cheaper food stuff and donate to charities of my choice, instead letting company to do it?
… and since I am using Game Changers as a name of this discussion, do check this cool website: http://gamechangers500.com/
