\nThis writing assignment is worth 10% of your final grade, You must address the assignment in a well-organized document

\nYour task:
\n1. Pick a disease, caused by a microbe, which you find interesting.
\n2. E-mail me the name of the disease and the microbe you would like to use prior to April 24th

\n2015 from your KBCC email address. I will approve or suggest an alternative, if necessary.
\n3. Research the disease thoroughly using resources including but not limited to PubMed, your
\ntextbook, Medscape, The Mayo Clinic, CDC, WHO, etc. Wikipedia is not a reliable or acceptable
\nsource.
\n4. You will compose a fictional case study based on your disease affecting an imaginary patient.
\nThis case study MUST contain the following sections:
\na. Background: Introduce the patient and provide an account of their symptoms, signs,
\nlifestyle factors, comorbidities, recent travel, and anything else you decide is relevant to
\ntheir diagnosis.
\nb. Physical and Laboratory Findings: Include whatever test results apply to the disease you
\nhave chosen. For example, does the patient have a fever? Elevated blood pressure? Is
\nthe patient anemic? Dehydrated? If the agent is bacterial, what are the Gram stain
\nresults? Arrangement? Metabolic testing? Blood Count? Where was the patient cultured
\nfrom? If it is viral, what type of virus is detected? You must include tests relevant to the
\ndisease you have chosen (what would a nurse or doctor do to evaluate the patient), and
\nthe results should correspond to the disease signs and symptoms.
\nc. Diagnosis: Name the microorganism causing the disease and discuss how the patient
\nexam\/background and testing results point to this diagnosis. Describe the
\nmicroorganism and the disease it causes, as well as how common this disease is in the
\nregion of the world your patient is from. How common is this illness in the United
\nStates? What is its importance to public health?
\n: Writing Assignment
\nd. Treatment: What is the treatment for this disease? Antimicrobials, surgery, etc.? If
\nthere is a drug treatment, what will you prescribe and for how long? What is the
\nmechanism by which your treatment works? Should the patient undergo any changes in
\nlifestyle? Are any public health measures recommended to prevent the further spread
\nof this disease (vaccines, quarantine, monitoring, cleaning)?
\ne. Outcome: What happened to the patient? Did they survive? Did they suffer any long
\nterm consequences? Do they require ongoing medical intervention as a result of this
\ndisease?
\nf. References: At least one article from a peer-reviewed scientific journal must be
\nincluded. You must have at least 4 references total.
