During the course of the quarter, you should identify 3 in-depth articles in high-level media sources (Wall Street Journal, New York Times, the Economist, the Atlantic, etc.) about a public policy issue that is (1) related to labor economics, and (b) related at least broadly to one of the topics covered in the course. Your short paper should provide a succinct summary of these articles, and then focus more on bringing economic analysis to bear on the issue – critiquing the articles if their economic analysis is flawed, and conversely pointing out and explaining when the economic analysis seems correct. Students should feel free to talk with me or the TAs during the quarter about their paper topics and progress on their papers. A one-page prospectus describing the topic of the paper and your source material is due Tuesday, February 28, in class. The final papers should be five pages (and no more). They have to be in the proper format with all source material referenced appropriately. (And of course students need to be aware of all issues regarding plagiarism.) Use 12-point font and 1 inch margins, and double space. The paper is due Monday, March 20, no later than 5PM. The project will be graded on both the content of the paper and the quality of writing. Work handed in late will be penalized.

Paper: You are required to write one short paper.
